This is Maria Lizbeth, age 22. She was born on January 27th, 1999 in the rural community of San Miguel Viejo, the fourth of seven children. When she was 10 years old, Lizbeth discovered the art program that happened every Wednesday afternoon at the home of the white lady who had recently come to live in the village, señora Elsa. The program was called Ojala Niños. Lizbeth attended for three years and now remembers her fondness for the teachers and all the wonderful materials and ideas. She says the teachers always gave everyone encouragement and no one was ever left out. Today, her younger brother, Josafat and sister, Sol, are attending Ojala Niños.
One of her best memories is of a choir concert in August, 2009, when about 50 Ojala children went on a bus to the Parroquia in the center of the city for the first time. The concert was performed by a choir from a university in the United States. Non of the children had ever heard music like that in a huge church like that. Lizbeth will remember it always.
Lizbeth attended primary and secondary schools, and began high school, but couldn’t continue. She still dreams of becoming a veterinarian.
