Who is the founder of Ojala Niños…And what is Ojala Niños?
I was born in Chicago in 1940, the only child of Swedish immigrants. I was blessed with those old-world values, which included a fine education in public schools and piano lessons from an older cousin. Music was my major interest through college at St. Olaf in Minnesota and Juilliard in New York City. Wherever I was throughout my adult life, I led choirs in churches, schools and community centers, believing that we all have that most important instrument, the voice. I had begun to take photographs with my first Brownie camera at age 8, and that has remained my second career passion. I traveled extensively in the US, selling my recorded piano music and my photographs. I had a small production company called “About Time Productions.”
I married twice, have 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, all still living in the US. I had always been searching for my real home on the planet, and when I met a couple from Mexico in Portland Oregon in late 1994, I was encouraged to visit them and check out Mexico. On my first morning in San Miguel de Allende, I knew I’d found my real home. I’ve been here since 1997.
For the first 10 years, I formed choirs of children in the 3 orphanages, and created an early childhood music program for public kinder and primary schools in town and in rural communities. I gave trainings to local people to be the teachers so that many children could have this experience. Singing children are the angels among us!
In 2007 I moved to a nearby rural indigenous community called San Miguel Viejo and built a modest house with the intention of living a simple, quiet life. Not to be!
Young curious children came by, never having seen a white person, never having seen real pets (I had 2 little dogs and a cat, always visible in the patio), and never having seen a whole house. One day I gave them new pencils…another day I invited a group of children into my patio and gave them some paper. They were joyful, amazingly creative, and cooperative. They kept coming by, I got more materials, more tables – and soon we had a beautiful place for learning for more and more children. It was so clear that they were hungry, not only for actual food, but for opportunities to explore, discover & learn. That has become OJALA NIÑOS, a non-profit education program for children in a small dusty rural village in the middle of Mexico. With such a simple effort, children anywhere can become the best they can be.

Nací en Chicago en 1940, hija única de inmigrantes suecos. Fui bendecida con esos valores del viejo mundo, que incluían una excelente educación en las escuelas públicas y lecciones de piano de un primo mayor. Me casé dos veces, tengo 4 hijos, 4 nietos y 3 bisnietos, todos todavía viviendo en los Estados Unidos. Siempre había estado buscando mi verdadero hogar en el planeta, y cuando conocí a una pareja de México en Portland, Oregón, a fines de 1994, me animé a visitarlos y conocer México. En mi primera mañana en San Miguel de Allende, supe que había encontrado mi verdadero hogar. Estoy aquí desde 1997.
Durante los primeros 10 años, formé coros de niños en 3 orfanatos y creé un programa de música para la primera infancia para las escuelas primarias públicas en la ciudad y en las comunidades rurales. Di entrenamientos a la gente local para que fueran los maestros para que muchos niños pudieran tener esta experiencia. ¡Los niños que cantan son los ángeles entre nosotros!
En 2007 me mudé a una comunidad indígena rural cercana llamada San Miguel Viejo y construí una casa modesta con la intención de vivir una vida sencilla y tranquila. ¡No lo fue! Pasaron niños pequeños curiosos, que nunca habían visto a una persona extranjera, nunca habían visto mascotas de verdad (yo tenía 2 perritos y un gato, siempre visibles en el patio), y nunca habían visto una casa entera. Un día les di lápices nuevos… otro día invité a un grupo de niños a mi patio y les di papel. Fueron alegres, increíblemente creativos y cooperativos. Siguieron pasando, conseguí más materiales, más mesas, y pronto tuvimos un hermoso lugar para aprender para más y más niños. Estaba tan claro que tenían hambre, no solo de comida real, sino de oportunidades para explorar, descubrir y aprender. Eso se ha convertido en OJALÁ NIÑOS, un programa educativo sin fines de lucro para niños en una pequeña aldea rural polvorienta en el centro de México. Con un esfuerzo tan simple, los niños de cualquier lugar pueden convertirse en lo mejor que pueden ser.
